Matanivusi Beach Eco Resort, Fiji

Replacing diesel with clean, reliable solar power

Matanivusi Beach Eco Resort is a luxury coastal destination in Fiji built around a strong commitment to environmental responsibility. For years, the resort relied on diesel generators for power, but fuel costs, maintenance demands, and emissions ran counter to its sustainability goals.

To align its operations with its environmental vision, the resort engaged Rainbow Power Company to design and supply an off-grid solar power system that could deliver quiet, efficient, and renewable electricity around the clock. The result is a fully integrated system that provides energy independence while enhancing guest experience and environmental performance.

Project Overview

The system was designed to supply clean, reliable power for all resort operations, including guest rooms, kitchens, lighting, air conditioning, refrigeration, and laundry. Using proven inverter and battery technology, Rainbow Power Company created a configuration suited to Fiji’s coastal climate, providing resilience against humidity, heat, and salt exposure.

By replacing its diesel generator system with solar power, Matanivusi Beach Eco Resort reduced operational costs, eliminated generator noise, and removed the need for regular fuel transport to the property.

System details:

  • System type: Off-grid solar and battery storage
  • Solar capacity: 35 kWp
  • Battery capacity: 100 kWh
  • Design: Off-grid configuration with SMA inverter technology

System Design and Integration

The installation features a 35 kWp solar array that provides power to the resort during daylight hours while charging the 100 kWh battery bank for use overnight and during cloudy conditions. SMA inverter technology ensures efficient energy conversion and stable supply for continuous operation.

The system was designed for minimal maintenance and simple local management. By providing training to resort staff, Rainbow Power Company ensured that daily monitoring and upkeep could be handled on-site without specialist technical support.

This approach aligns with RPC’s broader philosophy for Pacific island installations: to combine robust, export-quality equipment with practical solutions that empower local operators.

What They Said

“For resorts like Matanivusi, sustainability and reliability go hand in hand. Our goal was to remove the dependence on diesel while maintaining absolute comfort and performance. This project shows how solar power can enhance the guest experience and strengthen a business’s environmental credentials.”
— Paul O’Reilly, International Business Development Manager, Rainbow Power Company

Outcomes

Since installation, the system has provided consistent, renewable power across all resort operations. The elimination of diesel use has significantly lowered running costs and reduced emissions, while the quiet operation of the solar system has improved the resort’s tranquil atmosphere.

By generating clean energy on-site, Matanivusi Beach Eco Resort has strengthened its position as one of the leading sustainable tourism destinations in Fiji. The project demonstrates how environmentally conscious operators can adopt modern renewable technology without compromising service or comfort.

Project Suitability

This project showcases the capability of Rainbow Power Company’s off-grid systems for medium-sized resorts, eco-lodges, and tourism facilities. The system’s scalability and robust performance make it ideal for hospitality operations across the Pacific that seek reliable, low-maintenance, and sustainable energy solutions.
