Petrol and Diesel Price Surge: Time to Electrify Your Fleet

By: Matthew Wittemeier

Queued at the pump lately, watching dollars evaporate faster than fumes? Petrol’s hit $2.50 a litre in parts of NSW, diesel sits at $3+ at some pumps.

Attacks on Iran’s South Pars gas field and turmoil crippling oil exports from the war zone have slammed global supply, with experts forecasting elevated prices for 3–5 years. Non-renewable fuels aren’t just pricey, they’re a ticking insecurity bomb for households and businesses alike. The smart move? Electrify now with EVs or PHEVs, backed by home and workplace charging powered by solar and batteries.

The chaos is fresh. Strikes on South Pars, the globe’s largest natural gas field, plus disruptions to key oil export routes amid the Iran war, have slashed shipments. QatarEnergy and analysts peg supply hits at 17 per cent, with repairs dragging into 2029. Ripple effects?

Australian drivers face sustained hikes, as we import 90 per cent of our crude. Northern Rivers locals felt it sharp during last week’s Essential Energy outages, scrambling for jerry cans amid storm debris. Fuel queues stretched blocks, prices jumped 25 cents overnight. That’s the insecurity of diesel dependency in a world where geopolitics pulls the plug.

Government data drives the urgency home. The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) outlines the Future Made in Australia plan, funnelling billions into EV uptake and charging networks to hit 82 per cent renewables by 2030. The National Electric Vehicle Strategy targets 30 per cent EV sales by 2030, with $500 million for public chargers and tax breaks for business fleets. AEMO’s Integrated System Plan warns fossil fuels face volatility risks, pushing storage and EVs for grid stability.

Why wait? EVs slash running costs to one-fifth of petrol equivalents and provide immunity to pump shocks.

Transitioning makes dollars and sense. An EV or PHEV with home solar-battery charging turns sunlight into kilometres, dodging fuel hikes entirely. Install a Level 2 charger, pair it with a 10kWh battery, and charge overnight for pennies. Daily commute? Fuel savings hit a minimum of $2,000 yearly per vehicle when travelling 12,000km. Businesses imagine slashing fleet bills while staff plug in free at work. Push employers to add solar-powered or grid-tied chargers, it’s a staff magnet. Surveys show 70 per cent of workers prioritise green perks for retention, turning chargers into loyalty gold.

RPC is walking the talk. By year’s end, we’re more than doubling EV charging at our Nimbin HQ, adding two new free low-speed chargers (totalling four free ones) powered by our solar array, plus Nimbin’s first paid high-speed charger.

Public access to our free ev chargers by November at the latest, no strings. Charge up while you grab community coffee, or browse the local art at the gallery knowing every kWh traces back to local renewables. We have implemented similar systems for commercial workshops and farms, keeping EV vans running through outages and tools operating seamlessly.

The math stacks up. DCCEEW projects EV ownership halves household energy costs by 2030 with solar integration. Batteries help smooth peak demand, while smart charging can be timed to avoid higher tariffs.

For businesses, the benefits extend beyond cost savings. Electrified fleets and workplace charging can improve staff satisfaction, reduce turnover, and strengthen sustainability credentials.

One RPC client, a local delivery firm, switched three vans to PHEVs with workplace solar, cutting fuel 60 per cent amid the Iran spike. No more pump panics, just predictable, reliable range.

Fuel insecurity isn’t easing anytime soon. War-torn supply chains mean petrol and diesel stay volatile, but EVs with solar infrastructure deliver certainty. Governments back it, costs plummet, and forward-thinking bosses build it in.

Don’t fuel the uncertainty. Contact RPC in Nimbin today for your EV charger and solar-battery audit. Home setups are cheaper than you think and we’ll help pitch workplace incentives to your boss. Electrify your ride, secure your drive, push for chargers at work. Nimbin’s charging revolution starts now, your independence does too.
