Sustainable energy for an island destination
Located in the remote Yasawa Islands of Fiji, Mai Sunset Island Resort required a dependable power source that could operate independently of the mainland grid. Before the installation, the resort relied on diesel generation, which was costly to maintain and environmentally damaging.
Rainbow Power Company designed and supplied a complete off-grid solar-battery system for the resort. The project demonstrates how renewable energy can meet the demands of small-to-medium tourism operations in isolated environments while reducing the environmental footprint associated with imported fuels.
Project Overview
The system was engineered to provide reliable electricity for guest accommodation, kitchens, refrigeration, lighting, and general operations throughout the day and night. The design reflects Rainbow Power Company’s long experience in creating off-grid systems for tropical climates where humidity, salt exposure, and limited maintenance access require durable equipment and simple operation.
All components were selected for longevity and efficiency in island conditions. The array provides daytime power while charging the battery bank for a continuous overnight supply. The system ensures that the resort can operate year-round with minimal reliance on backup generation.
System details:
- System type: Off-grid solar and battery storage
- Solar capacity: 18 kW
- Battery capacity: 50 kWh
- Inverter capacity: 16 kW
- Design features: Corrosion-resistant components, island-grade cabling, and SMA inverter technology
System Design and Integration
Rainbow Power Company’s engineering team modelled the resort’s daily load profile to ensure the array and storage capacity met operational requirements. The installation was configured to deliver a stable single-phase supply that could easily integrate with existing site wiring and backup systems.
The 18 kW solar array powers day-to-day activities while simultaneously charging the 50 kWh battery bank. During periods of low sunlight, stored energy maintains power continuity, giving the resort full electrical independence. The system architecture was designed for remote monitoring and simple servicing, allowing resort management to observe performance and identify any maintenance needs quickly. Training was provided to local technicians to support long-term system operation.
What They Said
“Projects like Mai Sunset Island Resort show how renewable energy can enhance business operations and guest experience at the same time. By removing diesel dependency, resorts gain quiet, reliable power while cutting their running costs and emissions.”
— Paul O’Reilly, International Business Development Manager, Rainbow Power Company
Outcomes
The off-grid installation has eliminated the resort’s dependence on diesel, reducing both operational costs and greenhouse-gas emissions. The quiet operation of the solar-battery system has also improved the overall visitor experience, creating a more peaceful environment free from generator noise and exhaust fumes.
For the resort, the project represents a shift towards sustainable tourism that benefits both business and the environment. For Rainbow Power Company, it demonstrates how high-performance off-grid systems can deliver dependable power and positive environmental outcomes in one of the world’s most challenging operating contexts.
Project Suitability
The Mai Sunset Island Resort project illustrates the suitability of Rainbow Power Company’s off-grid systems for small resorts, lodges, and remote commercial facilities across the Pacific region. The approach balances technical performance with ease of use, ensuring that operations far from conventional infrastructure can achieve reliable, renewable power without sacrificing comfort or efficiency.
