Containerised solar power for sustainable tourism
Set in the hinterland of Port Macquarie, New South Wales, Mansfield Estate is a luxury eco retreat designed to showcase sustainable architecture and off-grid living. With accommodation, conference, and recreation facilities spread across the property, the estate required a high-capacity energy system capable of operating independently from the national grid.
Rainbow Power Company delivered a containerised SolVA off-grid solar-battery system providing dependable renewable energy for the entire site. This installation demonstrates how modern solar infrastructure can support premium tourism experiences while eliminating reliance on diesel generation.
Project Overview
Mansfield Estate’s power requirements extend well beyond typical residential use. In addition to accommodation and dining facilities, the site includes an event venue and commercial kitchen that demand consistent, high-load electricity.
Rainbow Power Company supplied a fully integrated containerised system incorporating high-efficiency solar modules, intelligent inverter management, and large-scale lithium battery storage. The design offers three days of energy autonomy under normal operating conditions, giving the retreat complete energy independence.
System details:
- System type: Containerised off-grid solar and battery storage
- Solar capacity: 120 kW
- Battery capacity: 320 kWh
- Inverter configuration: SMA inverters in a three-phase arrangement
- Backup generation: 60 kVA diesel system for extended low-sunlight periods
System Design and Integration
The Mansfield Estate installation was built around Rainbow Power Company’s SolVA modular design. All inverters, batteries, and control systems are housed in a climate-controlled container, ensuring durability and simplifying maintenance.
The 120 kW solar array provides power to the estate during daylight hours while charging the 320 kWh lithium battery bank for continuous night-time operation. The system’s three-phase output supports all on-site facilities, from air conditioning and lighting to kitchen equipment and conference technology.
A 60 kVA backup generator is included for resilience, though it is rarely required due to the system’s generous storage capacity and energy efficiency. The SolVA platform allows remote monitoring and data logging, enabling system performance to be tracked in real time.
What They Said
“Mansfield Estate is an example of how renewable energy can deliver performance and luxury at the same time. This project shows that off-grid living and sustainable tourism are entirely compatible when technology is applied intelligently.”
— Paul O’Reilly, International Business Development Manager, Rainbow Power Company
Outcomes
The SolVA containerised system now supplies the estate with clean, quiet, and reliable power every day of the year. Guests experience uninterrupted comfort while the business benefits from significantly reduced operating costs and environmental impact. The project demonstrates Rainbow Power Company’s capacity to deliver advanced solar infrastructure for high-demand sites, and the system’s design continues to serve as a showcase for RPC’s export-ready containerised technology used across the Pacific.
Project Suitability
This project illustrates the capability of Rainbow Power Company’s containerised systems to power large-scale, remote commercial sites. The Mansfield Estate installation confirms that sustainability and performance can coexist, providing a model for future off-grid hospitality and tourism projects.
