Reliable renewable power for a regional community school
Set among the rolling hills near Lillian Rock, Rainbow Ridge Steiner School has taken a major step forward in sustainability and energy independence. With support from the Association of Independent Schools of New South Wales, the school partnered with Rainbow Power Company to upgrade its existing off-grid solar system and create a reliable energy solution for classrooms and community facilities.
The new installation provides dependable renewable power for the entire campus, ensuring a consistent and comfortable learning environment while reducing ongoing energy costs and generator use.
Project Overview
Established in 1996, Rainbow Ridge Steiner School has always operated off the grid. Its original solar system, installed many years earlier, no longer met the school’s growing energy needs. Limited capacity and frequent generator use affected daily operations, particularly during summer and winter when air conditioning and heating were essential.
Rainbow Power Company designed a new off-grid solar-battery system to meet the school’s full electricity demand throughout the year. The project combines modern battery technology with high-performance solar modules to provide uninterrupted power for classrooms, administration areas, and community events.
System details:
- System type: Off-grid solar and battery storage
- Solar array: 160 high-efficiency solar panels
- Design features: Heating and cooling support, overnight battery storage, scalability for future expansion
System Design and Integration
The upgraded solar installation delivers stable power across the school’s network, powering classrooms, kitchen facilities, offices, and shared areas. Intelligent energy management ensures that lighting, computers, and appliances can operate simultaneously without performance drops.
Battery storage provides overnight power and reduces reliance on generators to nearly zero. The design also includes monitoring tools that allow the school to track energy production and use, supporting ongoing education about renewable energy among students and staff.
All components were selected for durability and longevity in regional conditions. The modular configuration allows additional solar capacity to be added in the future, ensuring the system can expand as the school grows.
What They Said
“The Rainbow Ridge project is a great example of how renewable energy supports community education. Reliable power has improved classroom comfort, reduced running costs, and allowed the school to focus on its students rather than its energy supply.”
— Paul O’Reilly, Business Development Manager, Rainbow Power Company
“Before the upgrade, we often had to schedule classes around energy availability. Now we have consistent power for heating, cooling, and technology in every classroom. It has transformed the way we teach.”
— Jane Robinson, Principal, Rainbow Ridge Steiner School
Outcomes
The new solar system has dramatically improved the school’s daily operations. Generator use has been almost eliminated, providing quiet, uninterrupted power throughout the day and night. Students and teachers now enjoy a comfortable, modern learning environment supported by renewable energy.
Beyond efficiency and cost savings, the project reinforces the school’s commitment to sustainability and community education. It serves as a local example of how renewable technology can strengthen regional schools both environmentally and financially.
Project Suitability
Rainbow Power Company’s off-grid systems are ideal for regional schools, community centres, and rural facilities where grid access is limited or unreliable. The Rainbow Ridge project highlights the company’s ability to design dependable, scalable systems that deliver long-term benefits for education and community development.
